The owners of tourism establishment, yacht owners and residents of the old harbour signed a petition to be handed to General Police Headquarters, Kyrenia Police Department, Ministry of Tourism and Kyrenia Municipality demanding speedy solution for the problems of the harbour.
According to Özgür Gökaşan who owns a cafe at the Old Harbour all the restaurants, cafes and bars at the Harbour suffer from unresolved problems with rubbish, rough roads, blocked sewage canals and sound pollution due to bikers. Speaking to Eniz Orakçıoğlu and Beran Dağtaş of Kıbrıs Postası Gökaşan said that all the businesses at the Harbour suffer from lack of control by the authorities. “Due to lack of coordination between authorities it is not clear whose responsibility it is to keep the Harbour clean and make sure that there is no sound pollution or rubbish lying around.
This antique Harbour use to wow the visitors, but now there needs to be lot of work done to bring back the same effect” said Gökaşan. In the petition which is signed by 21 business owners, an appeal is made to the authorities regarding the traffic arrangement at the Harbour.
The residents of the Harbour demand a timetable for specific vehicles so that the Harbour visitors are not disturbed by the motorbikes and ATVs passing through the Harbour at any time. The business holders also demand a new parking arrangement for trucks unloading.
According to Gökaşan who was speaking on behalf of the 21 business owners due to the parking problems trucks block the walking paths creating an unpleasant scene as well as preventing the visitors from freely enjoying a walk at the Harbour.
