Parliament of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus approved unanimously the changes to the constitution, which will come into effect “once it receives” approval at a referendum to take place on 29 June concurrently with local elections.

Changes to the constitution comprises of over 20 articles covering environment, individual rights and judiciary.

The proposals also include removal of the restriction towards public sector workers to join a political party. Nonetheless a public worker needs to take unpaid leave in order to take up executive positions in a political party.

If the proposals gets approved, the deputy elects will need to declare theirs, their wife’s and children’s wealth before they are allowed to take an oath.
