Yeni Erenkoy poll shows 82% of villagers do not want to be refugees again

Yeni Erenkoy poll shows 82% of villagers do not want to be refugees againThe inhabitants of Yeni Erenkoy have carried out a survey of their village, something rarely seen in the TC community.

According to the survey, people were asked to vote on property and political interests. The survey results showed that 82% of the respondents did not want to be refugees again. Responding to the question ‘In a possible solution would the people of Yeni Erenkoy accept to return to the Erenkoy region again’, 82% said they would not accept this.

The survey was carried out during the dates of 16-18 October over 289 households; the results proved that 85% of the people who had once been refugees rejected being refugees again. Of the villagers of 766 people, 41% were GCs, 53% were TCs and 6% were mainland Turks. 85% of those in the village were the original owners of the properties, whilst 14% of the homes belonged to someone else. 83% of the homes were built before 1974; 67% had properties in the south and 80% of them had exchange these for equal properties.

Another interesting fact of the survey says that if the Annan plan was brought to the table again today, 84% would reject it. However 53% of those who partook in the survey said they voted for President Akinci in the second round of the presidential elections.

87% wanted the continuation of the Turkey’s guarantor status to continue and 85% wanted the Turkish army to remain as they were.

92% said they definitely rejected the return of Guzelyurt to the GCs and 96% rejected the return of Karpaz in the same way.

Whilst the people of Yeni Erenkoy reject property and right to return, a majority of 83% said that all TRNC citizens should be a citizen of the new state irrespective of their birthplace.

60% responded positively to rotating presidency and 90% said TCs and GCs should have separate sovereignties.

Alongside the survey, a letter was sent to the President with 750 signatures on it stating that they did not want to be refugees again and insisted that primary right to property should belong to the TCs because of the difficulties they had encountered from GCs since 1963. The same letter was sent on to the PM, FM, Turkish Embassy, TC Peacekeeping Forces, Turkish Armed Security Forces and political parties.
