Burcu pointed out that the leaders would be meeting more regularly in November and they foresaw a more intense working programme ahead; this was an issue they had both agreed on.

Following the meeting between President Akinci and UNSG Special Advisor Eide, Burcu said together and with good intentions it was possible to find a settlement to the Cyprus issue.

Responding to a question on the give and take process and when that would be, Burcu said they were discussing the criterion of the property issue which was like the give and take process; however much progress is made the quicker it will be to progress onto the real give and take chapter. This, he said was a step closer to a settlement.

Asked to comment on the GC side’s positions on Turkey’s EU process and new chapters, Burcu said they did not agree with the GCs on this. The progress of Turkey’s EU process would be in everyone’s interest, he said and added that whatever the conditions were applied to other countries should be applicable to Turkey as well. He added that he did not think this issue would negatively affect the talks as this was an old position and not a new matter.
